22: Trouble

The cracking glass ticked away like a timer about to expire. The red flashed to dark as a sonic rhythm sent pulsating sounds through the thick window above. Each click was an electroshock designed to weaken the bond of the thickest glass. The rate became faster. Jia knew what would happen at the end of the increasing tempo. Jumping, he grabbed his helmet and collided with the two. The three of them fell to the deck only a second before the glass popped. The hole made a loud howl as shattered fragments of glass disappeared up into the air. The room released its pressure into the atmosphere, quickly escaping its containment. The open hatch leading down into the Douglass cabin started to scream as the air rushed out.

A pair of black boots hovered inside the broken window, and then brown cargo pants started to push their way through the hole. The escaping air made the figure float slowly at an unnatural speed. Above the cargo pants was the chest of a lean man in a black b-suit. The suit appeared to absorb the light and matched the goggles that now looked down on them. Under the insect-like eyes was a black respirator. In the last four feet, he fell naturally and landed gracefully on the metal deck. After the goggles became transparent, his eyes squinted at the three.

“That’s so cool. I need to remember that trick.” Jia said with excitement, then looked at Selene. “That is who was following me. He is the rig driver and like a supervillain or something.” The sensor on Jia started beeping, indicating the sudden loss of oxygen now escaping through the hole. Jia grabbed his helmet and quickly pushed it on Adonis.

Then he pointed to the driver. “Bad guy, sick him,” Jia shouted with partial breath.

Selene nodded in agreement, and Adonis leaped to his feet. The driver squatted in a combat stance. Coming quickly, Adonis gathered a punch for the driver, but it was blocked. Instead, the driver twirled around and slammed Adonis into the console. Adonis spun, kicking his legs as his back was planted flat on the old control center. The driver lifted a quick double forearm block, but the hit still knocked him back. Selene became worried. The new person was much better at combat than her uncle, and the air was making her gasp. Her face started to feel cold. “Jia, what is happening?” She could barely say.

“Welcome to Mars,” Jia said in a smile of irony. “don’t worry, I got you,” he said in one last breath and took her hand. After he pulled her to another room, he desperately searched through the gear. Spilling the bags on the floor, he was looking for something. The seconds were counting down inside his head as Jia knew they were about to faint. Dumping two bags at a time, he looked up to thank God as a pile of facial respirators fell to the floor. In a hurry, Jia handed one to Selene.
